I may get a lot of hate from this post… not a big fan of dog parks. I like people parks. Let me explain a bit.
Dog Parks, while good intended can get a really bad name quickly. Most people don’t have a clue about dog behavior or dog body language. Not knowing is okay, and normal. You are pretty awesome already, this is where a dog professional comes in.
Just like with children, some pet parents use the time at a dog park as socialization for themselves. These parents do not pay attention to what their dog is doing. By not catching behaviors/body language you are missing some really important information. Is your dog overwhelmed, ready to leave, or overstimulated and needs to leave?
Community Items in Dog Parks
Unfortunately, not all dogs going to dog parks are up to date on vaccinations, and some may be sick. Community toys, water bowls, and balls can spread diseases like warts, kennel cough, parvo… These diseases can be spread in any play situation with dogs, it is important to know if your dog’s playmates are healthy. This is why doggie daycare centers have become a big thing.
Alternatively, most doggie daycare centers ensure dogs are up to date on their vaccinations and have staff watching dogs. Hopefully staff are trained in dog behaviors and body language. Daycares typically have groups of dogs together of similar play style. Several change equipment for different groups to prevent cross-contamination. Use caution with doggie daycare centers as well, not all dogs do well in group settings and that is completely normal!
Without a doubt, dog fights! Do you know how to break up a dog fight? Fighting dogs scare most people, would you be scared? If a dog got caught in another dog’s collar, would you be calm enough to get those dogs separated? Yes, these are tough questions. Unfortunately, most people could not/would not jump in to help, and that’s okay, others would help in an instant…
People Parks
Finally, people parks are a great resource. Take your dog to the park and just hang out. No expectations, let your dog watch the world around them. Dog Parks can be a good resource use caution, know the dogs your dog is playing with, and bring your own bowl.
