Summer is headed our way, summer safety is important! If you haven’t visited your veterinarian lately now is a good time, it is important to do preventative care.
- Beware of bug bites in Idaho we have some months where the bugs are crazy! Get your heartworm testing done and make sure your dog is on medication during those nasty buggy summer months. There are several options available, not sure which is best, talk to your veterinarian.
- Hot pavement can wreck your dog’s paws! Take your bestie on their walk early in the morning or late at night. If you do need to be out in the middle of the day, check the pavement temperature and protect those paws.
- Hot cars can be deadly! Please do not leave your pet in the car even for a short period of time. Things happen, but losing a pet due to heat-related injuries doesn’t have to. Have your veterinarian’s number on hand!
- Lawns! Did you know most fertilizers and products on the market are toxic to your pets? Be careful to keep products away from nosy dogs and cats. Also check the plants you have in the backyard, some of our prettiest flowers are not safe for our animals.
- Hydration, are you drinking enough? Is your bestie? Keep fresh water on your outings and in your yard. We have a small fountain in our backyard, it circulates the water and keeps it cooler for the dogs to drink (and place their balls in).
- Sunscreen! Some of our short-haired friends can get a sunburn as easily as we can. If possible do not shave your pet and allow their fur to protect skin against the sun. Apply pet-approved sunscreen if needed to ears and exposed areas there are also sun shirts for dogs.
- Does your bestie have his/her name on their collar, identification is important. Are phone numbers up to date? Do you have all the state-required licensing up to date?
- Leash up! Yes, I understand your dog may be the most well behaved and loved in the neighborhood. Not all dogs are as happy or friendly. We are coming into an era where a lot of dogs have not been properly socialized due to COVID. Please give those dogs their space, they are learning. One bad reaction can lead to a lot of training or worse for owners.
- Too hot for that walk? Try some enrichment items like lick mats, puzzle feeders, diy enrichment, head out to Kuna and check out the Idaho P.U.P.
